SPH Medical’s Air Powered Lateral Transfer Device is ideal for both patients and caregivers

SPH Medical’s Transfer mattress was the first and remains the leading product for innovation in keeping patients and caregivers safe for well over three decades with their air-assisted lateral patient transfer system. Their range of widths sizes is the broadest on the market and they boast the highest possible quality control of their transport system, offering the best combination of function, warranty, support, and cost effectiveness in the industry.

The SPH Medical  air powered lateral transfer mattress is attached by a hose to the air motor that inflates the air mattress, comfortably cradling the patient, while constantly forcing air to the bottom, which is designed with many small air hole perforations. Once fully inflated, the air released through the holes, creating a cushion of air (similar to that of an air hockey table), that reduces the sheer force required to start moving a patient from one position to another. This greatly reduces the effort by up to 90% and overcomes the problem of the repetitive strain that a caregiver faces when moving multiple patients during the day. They can effortlessly move the patients with only one or two staff personnel, where normally it would take 4 to sometimes 8 to complete the transfer.

Air Powered Lateral Transfer System

The benefits of using the Transfer Mattress are many. Patient comfort is increased, and for the caregiver, incidences of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) caused by repetitive stresses due to lifting, pushing and pulling, therefore reducing injury-related costs. It doesn’t require special training to use and is very easy to store while operating. It can be used with either reusable or disposable transfer pads providing flexibility according to the needs or length of stay of the patient.

Concern for skin integrity:

The reusable Air Powered Lateral Transfer Device reduce friction and shear forces.

Infection control is taken seriously

Single patient use transfer mattresses reduce the risk of cross contamination.

Moisture wicking coverlet

These are single use covers that adds additional protection against fluids and soiling while wicking away moisture from patients’ skin to reduce risk of skin breakdown.

Durability, Safety, and ergonomics:

Seam failure is greatly reduced by using a nylon bonded thread that is double stitched, rejecting the common practice of using a cheaper, heat sealing design in constructing the Transfer Mattress. The handles are conveniently located all around the mattress.

Transfer Mattresses are radiolucent:

They are more transparent than the patient when it comes to being radiolucent. As no material is completely radiotransparent outside of a perfect vacuum, the Transfer Mattress can continue to provide comfort without pulling or lifting a patient who is seriously injured, or physically dependent in some way while being x-rayed, is a tremendous benefit to both the patient and the technician. Any ghosting that might occur can be attenuated by a skilled technician, but the patient being able to remain on the transfer pad outweighs the risk of the x-ray still containing that artifact on the exposure plate.

SPH Medical has over 15 years of experience implementing Safe Patient Handling programs that include Air Powered Lateral Transfer systems across the country, reducing risk of injury to caregivers, and improving patient outcomes.  SPH Medical offers the complete range of Air Transfer solutions including launderable and single patient use solutions coupled with our local onsite education to ensure the success of each hospital program.
